Maku‘u Hawaiian Homes Water System Development, Island of Hawai‘i

In 2003, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands needed to develop additional potable water for its Maku‘u Farm and Agricultural Lots in Puna. The project drilled a well on forested State land and also constructed a reservoir, access road, pipeline, electrical poles and lines, and appurtenant facilities. Geometrician prepared the joint federal/State EA for the project, which carefully considered the tradeoff between developing useable lots for native Hawaiians and impacts to native forests. The effort involved successful resolution of all issues with agencies with jurisdiction over wetlands, caves with historic sites and Species of Concern.
